John W. Simon, M.D. received his MD in 1976 at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and remained at the same institution for internship in medicine and for residency in ophthalmology. He completed subspecialty training in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia as a National Children’s Eye Care Foundation fellow. He joined the full-time faculty of the Albany Medical College in 1981 and has served as professor and chairman of ophthalmology since 1992. He holds a secondary appointment as professor of pediatrics.
Dr. Simon was president of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) and has served as visiting professor at medical schools nationally and internationally. His 180 publications cover a wide range of subjects in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus. His book on pediatric ophthalmology, A Child’s Eyes (1998), won the American Medical Writers’ Association award for “Best Medical Book of the Year.” Dr. Simon is the recipient of a Senior Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a Lifetime Achievement Award from AAPOS.
